7 year child. Piyush, Swati and my only child, is
fighting for life against Acute Lymphoblast Leukaemia
(a rare kind of blood cancer) at the Mount Elizabeth
Hospital, Singapore.
With a very generous financial, emotional and
logistical support from People from India, abroad and
a Matched Unrelated Donor Bone Marrow Transplant on
April 30th, 2007. This cutting-edge treatment,
available only in some countries around the globe
(Singapore being one of them) is the only hope Piyush
has at grabbing a chance at life again. Obviously,
this treatment is extremely expensive, and with the
modest means our family has, it has meant reaching out
to friends and sympathisers in India and elsewhere for
funds.
For nearly one and half month now, Piyush has been
warded in isolation at Mount Elizabeth Hospital,
waiting for the donors cord blood to grow. The good
news is that Piyush is now generating blood counts but
it is unfortunately growing at a much slower pace than
the doctors would have hoped for. Therefore his blood
counts remain very low exposing him to multifarious
infections and complications.
he will continue to be in the isolation room with
extraneous support like daily external platelets and
blood transfusions and a heavy-duty expensive
cocktail of 21 medications. With just each unit of
Blood-Bank sourced platelet transfusion costing about
SGD700.00 daily, you can imagine the kind of expenses
we are facing. Per day cost of treatment is nearly
8000 SGD.

major drain on our financial resources), but the
collection fell far short of the requirement given the
stringent medical criteria for donating platelets &
blood in this case. We are now extremely nervous about
our financial position as the cumulative expense on
platelets, blood transfusions, medications and an
extended hospital stay have sent costs spiralling out
of control.
In fact, as of June 9th, 2007, WE HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL
OUR FINANCIAL RESOURCES, having already coughed up
over $SGD 400,000.
Dr Patrick Tan, the treating Haematology specialist,
sees a very positive future for Piyush but admits that
even on a conservative estimate, with everything going
well, Piyush still has to undergo another month of
isolation with extraneous medical support, followed by
probably a month or two of O.P.D. treatment.

Now that Piyush has a good chance to make it through,
the money has run out.
